There’ve been lots of staff changes at Community Arts North West in the past month or two.
Amy Cham, our Digital Arts Manager, recently left us to go travelling round the world for a year (or more!).
Our Administrative Assistant, Natasha Evans, has also just moved on to pursue an MA in Arts Policy & Management at Birkbeck, University of London.
David Martin, our General Manager has been off due to illness, but happily will be returning to work very soon.
Yasmin Yaqub, our Lead Artistic Manager has now returned from maternity leave after giving birth to her son, Umar.
We’d like to wish both Amy and Natasha good luck and bon voyage, say ‘welcome back’ to Yaz and hope that David is back to full health very soon.
We’re in the midst of shortlisting for two new members of staff due to these recent departures - a replacement admin person as well as a Technician who will be responsible for running our in-house media lab.
We look forward to introducing our new members of staff in the next edition of the Artsnet newsletter.
One of the cornerstones of Manchester’s music scene for the greater part of the last century, Band on the Wall was at the centre of Manchester’s punk scene in the late 1970s when Buzzcocks, The Fall and Joy Division first played.
Since then it has played host to many internationally acclaimed artists including Mica Paris, Bjork, Art Blakey, Carleen Anderson, John Martyn and countless others.
Closed in 2005 for redevelopment, the venue opened in September 2009 with state-of-the-art new facilities and incorporates The Picturehouse in the adjacent building that provides a new social space and host complimentary events throughout the year.

To bring some positive energy and colour back to the Manchester streets, Global Grooves put on an Afoxé; a parade with drummers, dancers, singers and brass players all working together to spread good vibes and provide a choreographed, inspiring performance for all who chose to follow!
This fantastic event on Sat 1 August saw crowds dancing in the streets following our parade through Manchester City Centre, ending with a performance at Albert Square to mark the end of the Manchester Jazz Festival 2009.
Based on the success of this year’s pilot Afoxé event, we’re currently in discussions about the development of this fantastic project for 2010.

This project has been put together by volunteers to try and encourage the UK’s international music and dance network to grow from strength to strength. The site is still in its early stages of development but we welcome anyone in the creative industry to sign up and enjoy our site!
Artland Gallery has established itself as a significant new art space in the North West with its first exhibition last October. Manchester and New York by photographer Jan Chlebik.
The exhibition was very well reviewed, as was the gallery itself, which makes excellent use of a relatively small space. Housed in the basement of the Friend‘ s Meeting House, the gallery seeks out work of quality and integrity; combing aesthetic value with social and political content.
Artland Gallery director James Walmsley has taken a lead on several other international arts projects. He facilitated the major ‘Visions of Zimbabwe‘ exhibition at Manchester Art Gallery in 2005; and curated Fragile State, the first ever British showing of contemporary Kosovar art, at Stockport Art Gallery in 2007.
Their next exhibition, Paradise Lost by Michael Slusakowicz, opens 2 October.
