If you're an artist who's expert in or even nonplussed by community networks, policies & procedures but think you've something to say, then Artsnet may have the project for you.
We're seeking contemporary visual artists based in the North West, interested in making work about local decision making processes. The project is organised by Artsnet, the Creative Arts Network of the Community Network 4 Manchester. The CN4M 'is a network of networks, linking together neighbourhoods and areas of the city with communities of common interest and concern, in order to release our people power in shaping the future of our city'.
This opportunity isn't intended to be a community art project. The work will show the selected 7 artists' individual responses to the work of the networks and the themes of the pools (some of which may share agendas). The project aims to highlight the varied approaches and insights of artists, as opposed to utilising their skills towards a pre-destined 'outcome'.
Seven artists will use as a starting point the CN4M and will have the opportunity to observe, engage and work with key networks to research their work.
The potential subject areas for artists to respond to are: Culture, Crime & Disorder/Community Safety, Children & Young People, Economic & Local Employment, Health Inequalities, Sustainable Neighbourhoods and Transport.
If you're an artist who's expert in or even nonplussed by community networks, policies & procedures but think you've something to say, then Artsnet may have the project for you.
The project is planned to run from Nov-Mar 08 (culminating in exhibitions in community venues and a city centre gallery [tbc]) spring-summer 08. There may be further opportunities during the exhibitions for public workshops.
Inspired? Email sue@can.uk.com for more info & details. Application deadline: Mon 15 Oct.
For queries about the project, contact curator Alison Kershaw alison.sl-arts@good.co.uk 07767 356302.
If you're a city centre arts venue or community space interested in hosting the final exhibition, please contact us on the emails above!
I'm an artist: What's a pool?
The culture pool exists for anyone, either an individual or an organisation, who's
interested in cultural issues in the city and how it impacts on their work, enjoyment
and local community with particular reference to regeneration issues. By culture we
include the arts, libraries, heritage and sport. Key issues are how culture supports
the delivery of the aims of the strategic partnership in respect of health, employment,
environment, children & young people. The culture pool is keen to develop and
promote projects actively demonstrating the contribution culture makes to the city's
regeneration.
This is what the culture pool is talking about at the moment:
Community engagement in festivals
Monitoring the social impact of the arts and neighbourhood renewal in the city: Are we measuring the immeasurable? MP James Purnell recently commented on reducing the current target culture imposed on the arts. Can this work in other sectors?
For the voluntary arts sector to engage with the evidencing of the impact of their creative activity, a clear rationale is needed with a strong case for usage and potential benefits.
Are we spending more time on monitoring than delivering? The artist residency project is an opportunity to deliver, without an emphasis on targets.
Is there anything else we should be discussing? What's your burning issue regarding arts and communities in the city?
Contact sue@can.uk.com and we'll take it forward. (For info about artist project see jobs & opportunities section of this e-newsletter).

Established in 1857 and still owned and run by the same family 150 years later, Forsyth's large shop in the centre of Manchester is unique in having such continuous family involvement. This continuity has been largely responsible for their characteristic high level of service and quality of the products for which Forsyth's is known throughout the country.
The Forsyth brothers were apprenticed at Broadwoods (described by Beethoven as the prince
of piano makers) where their grandfather was the factory manager for many years and it was
Charles Hallé who persuaded them to join him in Manchester to help set up and manage
his newly founded Hallé Orchestra.
Forsyth's music shop is on 5 floors and the largest shop of its kind in the UK, having large specialist departments including sheet music, recordings, orchestral instruments- including instruments for student hire, guitars of all kinds and of course, pianos.
This year, the shop will undergo major and comprehensive refurbishment. The work is scheduled to take some 8-9 months and will include the reinstatement of a purpose designed concert hall seating some 150 people on the 2nd floor. For more info visit www.forsyths.co.uk

Afrocats is proud to present its new performance piece, My Hands Are Tied.
This exciting and energetic production involves dance, drama, humour and tragedy. My Hands Are Tied looks at the many ways that we can all be enslaved. Oppression occurs in our society as well as in the developing world. There are changes we all can make to free ourselves and others.
In two parts, it begins by exploring stories of female trafficking and child labour, and looks at the origins of slavery. In the latter part, three characters face struggles in modern Western society. They are ultimately thrown together and forced to confront the paths of their own lives.
The piece features both Afrocats members and students from Levenshulme High School. Don't miss this powerful and moving piece in the year that marks the 200th anniversary of the abolition of slavery.
Friday 12 & Saturday 13 Oct, 7.30pm at the Zion Centre, Stretford Road, Hulme. Tickets £6.50 / £3.50 conc.
Established in 2003 and led by Magdalen Bartlett, Afrocats is one of the most dynamic and energetic performance groups around! Combining the most exciting elements of dance, drama and music in our work, our aim is to create unity within diversity.
Afrocats was a finalist in Art Council England, North West's prestigious Art06 awards for its production of Where is Home, a theatre piece exploring the issues faced by young refugees in the UK.

In On the Act 2 is a performance lecture by In Place of War,
directed by James Thompson and pamelaneil. The performance explores an applied theatre
project with a group of child soldiers in Sri Lanka in 2000. Three months after the
project, many of the young men who took part were massacred at the hands of local
villagers and police. In remembering the project and remembering the participants'
deaths, the performance questions the ethics of artists and academics working in war
zones. In On The Act 2 is the second performance by James exploring the
complicity of researchers in the troubled contexts in which they work.
There will be an opportunity for questions with James Thompson after the performance.

As part of the new Special FX series at the Royal Exchange, LiveAMP presents excerpts of its premiere production Doin' Moon
Devised & performed by composer/cellist Anwen Lewis and spoken word artist Akiel 'Scorcha' Chinelo in a unique, live performance collaboration expressed in spoken word & classical music.

The East Manchester Food and Drink fringe festival has been successfully running alongside
Manchester's Food and Drink Festival (MFDF) since 2002. The Manchester Food and Drink Festival
is the largest and most exciting event of it's kind in the UK, encompassing the whole of Greater
Manchester.
New East Manchester's Cultural Regeneration Officer, Lela Cribbin, coordinates the annual East Manchester event which aims to raise awareness of healthy eating, local sourcing and catering careers amongst residents.
'Each year the festival just seems to get bigger and better. There's a lot to do with events taking place in community centre's, libraries and schools across the area. As the majority of events are free it's a great way to meet new people and try new food'. Lela Cribbin
Now in its fifth year, this 10-day festival takes place in schools and community venues across the area. Through coffee mornings, poetry workshops, theatre, fairtrade tasters, information stalls and 'grow your own' sessions, residents are encouraged to learn more about the benefits of healthy eating, fairtrade and how they can incorporate these issues into their lifestyles.
This year, events will take place between 5 & 15 October and coincide with MFDF's 10th anniversary celebrations which is putting healthy eating on top of its agenda following national concerns about obesity and life expectancy.
New East Manchester will be working with a number of local schools and organisations such as Manchester Libraries, Zest and Gorton Monastery to coordinate a delicious menu of activities for local residents.
The Manchester Museum has opened a new exhibition Revealing Histories: Myths About Race to mark Black History Month & the bicentenary of the Abolition of the Slave Trade Act.
Many Victorian institutions, including The Manchester Museum, contributed to the same racist thinking that had justified slavery. As part of the Revealing Histories: Remembering Slavery project, Myths about Race explores the difficult and sensitive issues that this raises.
Objects & images are used which show how racist ideas were supported by museums and other media, and highlight how individuals & organisations in Manchester have worked to dispel these myths. The exhibition invites you to question the displays in the museum and to help shape its future.
A number of special events relating to the exhibition and Black History Month are taking place as follows:
Ideas Café: Are Museums Racist?

Extraordinary Rendition (EXR), is a Manchester musicians' collective based in the rehearsal
rooms at the Carlton Club, Whalley Range.
EXR was formed in 2006, when rhythm section and founder members Mike Rickard and Nick Harris decided they didn't want to play in just one band, playing just one type of music.
They came up with the idea of putting together a house band of drums, bass, guitar, keyboards and brass section which could back up vocalists and soloists of different musical styles. This led to a regular Sunday evening live music night in Chorlton.
As the popularity of the night grew, a growing number of musicians and vocalists began to join the band on stage. Solo performers, covers and original bands would turn up on the night and perform short sets. By then, the collective was born!
The organisation went on to provide the back line and a large part of the live music at the 06 & 07 Chorlton Arts Festivals, Celebrate Festival Whalley Range and Manley Park Fun Day.
EXR is currently in the process of putting together an acoustic circuit of venues around Manchester, as well as an increasing number of venues where EXR original and covers bands regularly play.
The latest is the EXR Electric Award, a six month competition for local bands, with a top prize of a trip to Prague!
The aim is for all EXR musicians and vocalists to be paid for their performances.
EXR is always looking for new high quality acts and other talented music-related personnel to join them. If you're interested, come along to the Chorlton Revise Bar Sunday afternoon free jam session, 5-9pm and play for us. Solo acts and bands are always welcome.
Three mp3s, some photographs and a biog are all that are needed to secure your free page on the EXR website, www.exr.org.uk
