Re-cycling objects and re-appropriating them can captivate audiences through nostalgia & intrigue. This exhibition hopes to stretch its viewers to see more, for example Debbie-Adele Cooper explores the value of a lost life in her installation, fascinated in the space where absolute importance turns to insignificance in these everyday objects.
Re-Use, Objects of Virtue uses storytelling, re-configuration & movement to look at the possibilities of things that have gone before & come around again.

Artists: Alice Bradshaw, Debbie-Adele Cooper, Thomas Evans, Kate Lynch, Charlie Rockliffe, Peter R Smith, Jack Welsh.

Nexus Café, Dale Street, Northern Quarter, M1 1JW. 10am-7pm Mon-Sun, to 23 Aug.

The Whit Walks Project Launch is here!

Come & join Gorton Visual Arts on Mon 27 July at 3.30pm at MOSI to celebrate our latest work based on the famous Whit Walks.

Gorton Visual Arts, St. James’ Primary School and St. Francis R.C. Primary have been working together on an exciting intergenerational project to create a range of textile works including banners inspired by the Gorton Whit Walks. The traditional walks date back two centuries and are rooted in the history of Lancashire mill towns. The project is part of Gorton 100, a celebration of the urban district of Gorton becoming part of the City of Manchester. A beautifully embroidered banner will be paraded through the streets of Castlefield to the MOSI by people involved with the project, young & old, to arrive in time for the exhibition launch.

The people of Gorton have been digging deep to supply Gorton Visual Arts with photographs and other archive materials including church banners and costumes worn at Whit Walks gone by which will be reflected in the work.

Please come and celebrate the project by joining us for the launch and refreshments on Mon 27 July, 3.30pm, a chance to get up close and personal with the work and the group!
Come and celebrate with us!

Textiles Learning Space, Textiles Gallery, Main Building, Museum of Science & Industry, Castlefield, M3 4FP. The work will be exhibited throughout the summer. Call MOSI for further details on 0161 832 2244.

Before the launch at 3pm, there’ll be a demonstration at MOSI taking you on a whistle-stop tour of how cotton is processed from its raw state to the finished product - a piece of calico cloth. Learn about textile mill working conditions, when respiratory diseases were rife and children as young as five were employed to sweep under these dangerous machines.

For information on the Gorton Visual Arts please call Ian McKay, lead artist on 07752 126007.

The Whit Walks Project has been funded by Arts Council England, Awards for All, New East Manchester and Manchester City Council.

In Place of War launch international network

In Place of War logoIn Place of War is delighted to launch a new international network of theatre practitioners & academics. Come and meet theatre practitioners from Kosovo, Gaza, Sudan, DR Congo, Sri Lanka, Northern Ireland & the UK at the launch reception on Fri 24 July at The Martin Harris Centre, The University of Manchester from 6pm.

The In Place of War Network is a collaborative initiative for academic and practice-based research into the role, function and impact of theatre & performance in places of armed conflict. The network has been formed following a major 3-year AHRC funded research project exploring theatre & performance practice from sites of crisis and armed conflict, looking specifically at Sri Lanka, refugees in the UK, Rwanda, Northern Ireland & Palestine. The network is supported by The Leverhulme Trust.

The In Place of War Network will meet once a year over the next three years in network partners’ countries, the first meeting taking place in Manchester this July. The core network partners include:

School of Educational and Professional Studies, Griffith University, Australia; Kwoto Cultural Centre, Khartoum, Sudan; Theatre for Everybody, Gaza, Palestinian Territories MULTIMEDIA Center, Pristina, Kosovo; Search for Common Ground, DR Congo; Stages, Sri Lanka; University of Manchester, In Place of War.

From the Greeks to Shakespeare, war has been a major theme in theatre & performance. However some of the most astounding and demanding performance projects in recent years have not been about war but have come from war zones themselves.

In Place of War is concerned with these initiatives - theatre in refugee camps, in war-affected villages, in towns under curfew, in cities under occupation, in refugee communities in foreign/host countries. Why in times of disruption have individuals and communities turned to performance? The project aims to research, link, debate and develop the practice of performance in sites of conflict - bringing together theatre makers and scholars who practice performance: in place of war.

Places at the network launch reception are free, but in order to secure your place, please register here: http://inplaceofwar.eventbrite.com

For more information on The In Place of War Network and access to resources, including the In Place of War database visit www.inplaceofwar.net

Farewell to Feast!

MIA's Feast logoAu Revoir... The final Feast! picnic by the lake took place in Manchester between 5 & 7 June.

As many of you will know, this year we not only presented the final Feast but also the Last M.I.A. and Streets Ahead event in Manchester for the foreseeable future.

Over the past 21 years, we have been bringing outstanding events to the city - from our early days exploring world music, through legendary festivals such as Ona Catalana, Streets Ahead and the Garden of Delights and special events such as Bells in the Sky, Legs on the Wall, the Farm in Albert Square and the Fire Garden in Platt Fields. We hope we’ve presented work that will live on in your memories.

Our aim has always been to bring some of the world’s top artists to Manchester whilst also working extensively with locally based acts and finding ways to involve community groups and individuals in what’s going on and create events that are welcoming to all.

Throughout our history, M.I.A. has always been under-funded and we have only kept going because of the hard work and dedication of our small team - usually numbering only two or three people - and by putting most of the money we have raised directly into the artistic programme.

Two years ago, Anne Tucker who co-founded and directed M.I.A. stepped down to focus her energies on planning centenary celebrations in Platt Fields Park in 2010. This led us to consider how we could keep presenting events on a sustainable long-term basis. We knew it would have required increased support, and for the past 18 months we have been discussing this with our principal funders. Although Arts Council England has been broadly supportive, Manchester City Council are not willing to increase their investment in us and have made it clear that their priorities for increased spending on cultural activities lie elsewhere.

This is both disappointing and sad, there’s so much more work we wanted to share with you (and of course Anne had great hopes of a centenary Feast! next year in Platt Fields). We shall greatly miss working for and with the many different Manchester communities and our huge, warm and appreciative audiences here.

However, we continue to present our special style of events elsewhere in the North West, especially in Cumbria, where we have just successfully launched LAKES ALIVE (gaining a 4**** review in the Guardian). Many are within easy traveling distance so we hope you join us on our new adventures. You can keep up to date by registering for free email bulletins at www.streetsahead.org.uk.
