Artsnet Update

I don't know about community networks, but I know what I like...

Artsnet logortist and curator Alison Kershaw introduces a project that asks artists to make work in response to the Community Network 4 Manchester.

Is there a use for artists? I mean aside from asking them to become facilitators, consultants, evaluators, therapists - from being deliverers of outcomes for social policy.

Everyone is asking what artists do and why! More people are now keen to talk about and look at Contemporary art. Artists are keen that their work has a relationship with its audience and artists' work is reaching out to more diverse concerns, communities and contexts than ever. Activity at museums and galleries is growing and the creative industries are apparently growing at a faster rate than any other, with government initiatives such as Creative Partnerships with schools actively recognising this fact.

It has been suggested that the contemporary artists are creating different models for what art could be - and that's the interesting thing; its not just what these artists make but the ways they look at the world and how some artists do ordinary things in different ways that makes the processes of artists these days so vital.*

The more this world becomes the 'the world of information', or the more culture becomes identified with integrated networks of distribution and communication of the 'culture industry', the more remote, indirect and abstract the models of art become; the better synchronised the links between the individual and general interests and the greater the dependency of social contact on social institutions, the more the society tends to learn about itself not from the observations of artists but from observing the artist*

The idea behind this Arts Council England funded project was to examine aspects of the Community Network 4 Manchester, from the viewpoint of contemporary artists. Would this help to achieve a better understanding of the network and what it does? Would it perhaps throw up questions and new ways of tackling some of the themes and concerns of the network?

Undoubtedly the process of developing the work and the exhibition is where the questions have arisen. What does the experience of the city really feel like? What are all these meetings really achieving? What does working mean? Can you really pin down social capital? Are we all subtly directed, carried with a flow or can we take action to change things?

Artsnet artistsThe 7 artists taking part, selected from an open submission: Simon Grennan & Christopher Sperrandio, William Titley, Hafsah Naib, Andrew Wilson, Jo Lewington, Jil Moore and Joe Richardson represent a wide range of professional experiences, approaches, concerns and techniques that reflect some of the varied practice of artists today. Being given an open brief in itself caused some confusion for artists used to criteria and outcomes being required.

The project aims to raise more questions than it answers and the audience is expected to be broad too, from those involved in the way contemporary art addresses the city, to workers in voluntary and statutory agencies and local people interested in what is happening to the city and what it means to their lives.

Each art work will be accessible in a different local 'community' venue - the kinds of places typically connected to Community Network 4 Manchester activity. Each artist will show their work in one of the six geographic areas; South, Wythenshawe, South Central, North, East and the A6 Corridor. So it's an exhibition that will extend from Harpurhey to Wythenshawe and involve negotiating a journey of some miles. It asks that the various different audiences go outside of their respective zones to see their city in a different light.

Manchester skylineThe experience of viewing the work will take people to places that also embody some of the history of community development in Manchester. We also hope to offer a series of tours and workshops to complement the exhibition. Along the way, if more people learn about what CN4M actually is (and they already are), then that could be a useful unexpected outcome!

Watch this space for more news about the exhibition that will be taking place in late September and next spring when all the work will be shown in the city centre. To find out more, contact Alison Kershaw 07767 356302 alison.sl-arts@good.co.uk

10 new SLAP-DASH books

In 2007, St Lukes Art Project’s own community publishing project SLAP-DASH publishing issued the challenge, 'Have you got a book inside?' to creative people in Manchester. Six months on, they're publishing 10 new books created using the latest in 'print-on-demand' technology.

Rachel of Slap-Dash booksA book launch & exhibition takes place on Tue 8 July, 5-8pm. The exhibition continues Mons, Tues & Thurs, 1-4 pm or by arrangement until 8 Sept at St Lukes, Guidepost Square, Longsight M13 9EA. Phone Alison on 07767 356302 for details.

SLAP-DASH has pioneered the introduction of these technologies to local people who may otherwise be excluded from the printing & distribution of their work via conventional publishers or vanity publishing.

Designed & created by people who use St Luke's Art Project, and working with artist Rae Story, each author's book will be displayed in the exhibition.
Copies of the books are available at www.lulu.com/stlukesartproject, with any money raised going back into the project.

The books represent a diverse range of interests & ideas, including how short-wave radio can be useful in combating mental ill health, biographies, poetry, a comic book picturing Manchester as Gotham City, a photographic essay about life in Ghana and books using photos & drawings in unexpected ways to create unique artists' books.

The project was funded by Arts Council England, North West and St Lukes Art Project.

Manchester music industry trailblazer found in UK-wide competition

Seven talented music entrepreneurs from across the country have been chosen as finalists in the new UK Young Music Entrepreneur award (UKYME). Ruth Daniel, Manchester-born & based founder of local indie label Fat Northerner Records was the only short listed candidate from the North West.

From the founder of a company selling instant live concert CDs, to a leader in community music initiatives, an independent record company owner and a young 'brand partnerships' pioneer, the award recognises the best in UK music entrepreneurship.Young Music Entrepreneur award ceremony

Launched in May by the British Council and the National Endowment for Science, Technology and the Arts (NESTA), UKYME aims to find the boundary-breakers in the UK's music industry and give them the chance to find out more about what is happening out there in emerging music markets, by becoming part of the British Council’s international network of young creative entrepreneurs.

The competition was open to music industry specialists aged between 25 & 35, who have at least 3 years experience and a track record in innovation. The finalists were chosen for demonstrating that they are seeking to push the boundaries of the industry and have a vision for extending international business and cultural relations through music.

Although Ruth didn't win the award, which was announced at a ceremony in London on 20 June attended by Fergal Sharkey and Cherie Booth QC, being short listed was 'an honour as the other finalists are all exceptional'.

More info about the award can be read at www.creativeconomy.org.uk/UKYCE/Finalists.asp?ID=14

More info about Fat Northerner can be found at www.fatnortherner.com

Bigfoot Local Providers

Bigfoot Arts Education (A social enterprise) is granting licences to experienced drama facilitators in order to establish a nationwide Local Provider Network that will enable schools in cities, towns and rural areas to have access to its successful drama-in-education programmes.

Bigfoot has 10 years experience helping to raise educational standards in schools and its groundbreaking work continues to inspire and challenge children in their learning and development.

Do you have what it takes to be our local representative in the North West? We are keen to hear from people from Liverpool, central & Greater Manchester, Carlisle, Blackpool, Blackburn and other areas.

The Bigfoot Local Provider Network will be driven by a number of experienced freelance drama facilitators who have been selected by Bigfoot based on their skills, commitment, character and business acumen.

Providers will need to purchase an annual licence in order to deliver Bigfoot's programmes exclusively in their local area. They must also be willing to invest in professional development training so that each specialist programme can be delivered to meet quality standards.

Once providers are granted their licence and have completed their training then they can start delivering and coordinating Bigfoot programmes.

There is excellent earning potential in being a Bigfoot Local Provider with opportunities to choose from a number of different licences. The cost of the licence is covered almost as soon as you start work so you will never be in debt.

If you are an experienced drama facilitator with at least 3 years experience facilitating drama in schools and community settings and you want to widen your potential for work by representing one of the UK's most respected arts education companies then apply today without delay.

We'll be launching our first round of Bigfoot Local Providers in September, January 2009 & April 2009.

Licences are offered to successful candidates on a first come first served basis. For an application form email karl@bigfoot-theatre.co.uk
