Exodus Festival comes to the heart of Manchester!
Sun 18 July, 12-6pm
Albert Square & Manchester Town Hall
The Exodus Festival is back again for the 9th year running celebrating the arts & culture of Greater Manchester’s diverse refugee communities. Organised by Community Arts North West, the Exodus Festival is a highlight in the region’s festival calendar with its vibrant mix of contemporary & traditional music, dance and culture from around the world and exciting cross-cultural collaborations.
This year, in the true spirit of Exodus we’re migrating again, this time to the heart of Manchester. CAN’s delighted that this year’s event will take place at Manchester Town Hall & Albert Square, giving the festival pride of place in the city centre.
2010 is a special year for the Festival in more ways than one, as it also marks the final year of our Big Lottery ‘Reaching Communities’ funding and therefore the final year of the festival in its current format. Whilst CAN is hopeful about the future, we really want this year’s Festival to be our biggest and best yet!
So with this in mind, we hope you’ll join us to celebrate all things Exodus. Be prepared to be delighted by an exciting range of music from countries as diverse as Afghanistan, Poland, Congo, Kurdistan and Zimbabwe. Let your taste buds run wild with an array of home-cooked soul food including delicious cakes from around the world.
Experience new cultures 1st hand through our diverse creative workshops including Chinese kite making, West African dance, Capoeira, Tai Chi, Salsa, African ceramics and Mehndi. Come get your family photo portrait done in the beautiful surroundings of the Town Hall and keep the kids amused in our arts & crafts workshops. There’ll be indoor & outdoor activities to suit all weathers, though of course it’s going to be sunny on 18th July!
So what are you waiting for? Bring the kids, your dancing shoes and soak up the spirit of freedom!

mjf marks 15 years of “musical mystery and risk”
23-31 July 2010
The Manchester Jazz Festival (mjf) reaches its 15th birthday in July with nine days of music unlike any other on the UK jazz festival circuit.
True to the spirit of the festival, this year’s programme will feature musical firsts from Britain & abroad, including the world premiere of a suite for jazz orchestra led by trumpeter, Neil Yates, plus international debuts by Spanish pianist, Baldo Martinez, and Franco-German duo Daniel Erdman & Frances Le Bras.
Other highlights include performances by jazz “supergroup” Simcock/Walker/Swallow/Nussbaum - playing live on BBC Radio 3’s “Jazz on 3” on Mon 26 July - and Phil Bancroft’s Home, Small as the World - which among a multimedia experience features one musician’s contribution beamed directly by wi-fi from his Manchester home.
Phil Bancroft, Home, Small as the World
And, for the second year running, the mjf’s “young bands” initiative will give home-grown talent - with 6 new artists selected from the Greater Manchester area - the chance to play free afternoon gigs around the city centre.
Within the festival’s “mjf originals” initiative to showcase new work, multi-instrumentalist Neil Yates’ “Surroundings” is an Antiphonal Jazz Suite, which places the N-Circle Jazz Orchestra’s 19 musicians around the venue to create a 3-D “surround sound” effect.
In another festival must-see, the music of Raymond Scott - the man who composed music for the Looney Tunes cartoons - will be played by The Stu Brown Sextet, a band formed in 2008 to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Scott’s birth.
Also new to the programme this year is a jazz strand with afternoon tea at the Midland Hotel
Visit www.manchesterjazz.com for full listings and soundclips.

Working in partnership with the health sector could help you to tap into sources of funding, reach your demographic targets and use your creativity to really make a difference.
The cultural sector offers valuable benefits to the health sector. Using creativity and participation in addressing important healthcare issues can deliver cost-effective, profound and wide-reaching results.
From projects working to humanise health environments, improving life for patients, visitors and healthcare staff, to projects on mental health helping to unlock emotion and reduce the need for medication, high-quality arts interventions in health are making a measurable impact.
But how to get started? How can you make your offer relevant to the health sector? And why bother? Join us at the All About Audiences Industry Seminar to find out.
If you’re keen to explore the opportunities presented by cross-sector working, or to increase your confidence and skills in working on issues of health and wellbeing, this seminar is perfect for you.

About members
Beyer Peacock
This summer, Gorton Visual Arts presents “Beyer Peacock”.
Beyer, Peacock and Company was an English railway locomotive manufacturer with a factory in Gorton. Founded by Charles Beyer and Richard Peacock, it traded from 1854 until 1966. It received limited liability in 1902, becoming Beyer, Peacock and Company Limited.
Gorton Visual Arts will be celebrating the existence of the company and the people who worked there this summer with a massive public art mosaic. Working closely with Gorton Local History group, we’ll be asking local residents to share their memories & experiences through photographs & stories.
The material that we gather will form the basis of the mosaic design. The mosaic will be created by two sheltered accomodation centres Patrick Roddy Court, Thomas Regan Court, Gorton‘s Young at Heart Group and All Saints Primary School; with the help & expertise of Gorton Visual Arts members.
The huge mosaic will be permanantly exhibited on the exterior walls of Patrick Roddy & Thomas Regan Courts for all of Gorton and East Manchester to see.
For more info contact our Development Officer on james@gortonvisualarts.org.uk or visit our blog at http://gortonvisualarts.wordpress.com
We aim to install the work in October - to view our progress please keep visiting our blog.
