Community Arts North West (CAN) wins £500,000 Reaching Communities Grant from Big Lottery Fund

Last November, Community Arts North West (CAN), announced the news of a £500,000 grant from the Big Lottery Fund to support its ground-breaking work with refugees and asylum seekers over the next three years in the Greater Manchester area.

Community Arts North West StaffThis award, the biggest in CAN's 30 year history, will continue the organisation's nationally acclaimed creative programme Exodus which has run since 2004. The existing programme includes a one-day festival, short film programmes and live music events showing the creative talent of refugee artists and community groups in Greater Manchester.

The Big Lottery Fund grant will be used to develop new grass roots participatory arts projects amongst refugee communities which will develop into high-profile, public showcases. It will generate a number of jobs - a full time Exodus Coordinator, two part-time Exodus Artistic Managers, a part-time Information Worker and a part-time Administrative Assistant, as well as many opportunities for freelance artists and project managers.

Cilla Baynes MBE, Director of CAN, said of the award:
'Greater Manchester has a long history of giving sanctuary to refugees and asylum seekers, and our Exodus programme is part of that proud tradition. Exodus gives a voice to the many refugee and asylum-seekers who live in Greater Manchester, and a major aim of our project is to help integrate newcomers to the UK into their host communities through creative projects that welcome everyone.

The Big Lottery Fund is highly competitive and this award is very significant for Greater Manchester as it recognises the ground-breaking work happening here. The award couldn't come at a better time to continue our work.'

Help save queerupnorth from Arts Council cuts!

queerupnorth logoArts Council England has announced plans to end its annual funding of queerupnorth in March 2008. This will lead to the cancellation of the 2008 festival in Manchester, halt all future touring plans, end their unique programme of work for young people and result in the immediate closure of the organisation.

queerupnorth is launching an appeal to encourage Arts Council England to reconsider their decision and continue supporting queerupnorth. If you have enjoyed or benefited from queerupnorth in any way during the last 15 years - as artists, as audiences, as participants - you are urged to show your support by doing a number of things:

Please add your name & comments to the petition at:
www.gopetition.com/petitions/save-queerupnorth-from-arts-council-cuts.html

The appeal against the funding cut will be submitted to Arts Council England on 15 January, with the appeal considered on 25 January.

It's essential that we act now if we're to succeed in saving queerupnorth.

MAiLOUT

The MAiLOUT Trust is the UK national organisation with the purpose of supporting, advocating and developing participatory arts work in all art forms and a wide range of social and community contexts, including arts in education, health, the environment, regeneration, social inclusion and community development, black arts, rural arts, disability arts, arts and offenders, and building-based arts development.

MAiLOUT publishes the bi-monthly MAiLOUT magazine, and e-MAiLOUT, its online publication. Both the magazine and e-MAiLOUT provide individuals, organisations and educational institutions with an interest in the sector with information on good project practice, ideas, debate and linking and networking opportunities.

They also give information on the policies, priorities and funding schemes of potential commissioners or funders of work, and link practitioners to organisations and agencies with sympathetic or complementary aims. In common with other magazines which are campaigning, engaged in advocacy and encouragement in arts, charitable and other voluntary sectors, much of the content of the magazine is written from the position of allowing the sector to speak loudly and positively of and for itself.

Manchester named UK's 2nd most creative city!

A recent 'Sharpie Markers' report shows the rise of Britain as a Creative Super Power and identifies the UK's Top 20 Creative Towns.

The Sharpie Creativity Index showed that creativity in Britain is being driven by Northern and Scottish cities such as Manchester, Liverpool, Glasgow, Leeds, Sheffield, Newcastle and Nottingham.

The research has also shown that more Brits visit art galleries than go to football matches.

Legacy Trust fund launched - London 2012

A new £40 million fund that will use the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games to promote the arts and sport to young people and communities was launched in November 2007.

Legacy Trust UK will support cultural, artistic, educational and sporting activities all over the country. Recently appointed board chair, Dugald Mackie launched the fund at the City of London, alongside Olympics Minister Tessa Jowell and Culture Secretary James Purnell.

Legacy Trust has been established to help to ensure a celebration of the London 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games across the UK and to help create a lasting legacy.

£3.02m will come directly to the North West for innovative projects that encourage participation in culture, knowledge, sport and well-being.

The Trust will use £40 million funding endowed by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (£6 million), Arts Council England (£5 million), the Big Lottery Fund (£5 million), and the Millennium Commission (£24 million - since been transferred to the Big Lottery Fund) to deliver a programme of cultural and sporting activities at local, regional and national level.

The Trust will form partnerships with organisations that will deliver the supported programmes. The Trust plans to support a small number of national programmes, including the UK School Games, the Big Arts Week (working title) and the World Festival of Youth Culture (working title).

The remainder of the endowment will be distributed throughout the three nations (Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland) and nine English regions. In doing so, it will work closely with the London Organising Committee for the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games (LOCOG).

Inaugural Asian Art Triennial

Asia Triennial logoThe UK's first Asian Art Triennial (ATM08) takes place between 5 April & 1 June 2008. It was conceived by Shisha, the UK's premier international agency for contemporary South Asian crafts and visual arts, in partnership with Castlefield Gallery, Chinese Arts Centre, Cornerhouse, Manchester Art Gallery, Manchester Metropolitan (through MIRIAD and the Faculty of Art & Design) and The International 3.

The inaugural ATM Programme in 2008 will echo Manchester's strong political and social history, reflect new artistic practice and seek resonances between Manchester and Asia, by exploring the notion of 'protest' in its widest sense.

The theme of protest is being used as a starting point for a wide variety of new commissions and the selection of work by artists from a range of Asian countries that have never been shown in the UK before. Through the ATM08 framework devised by Shisha, each of the partner venues is curating their own show and choosing how to engage with this theme through their choice of individual programme, selection of artists and work.

Pink and Blue review

Pool Arts, an arts organisation based in Ardwick and Longsight, recently mounted an exhibition of members' work at the derelict former home of Elizabeth Gaskell on Plymouth Grove - slap bang alongside the regeneration area off Devonshire Street.

Artists placed works in all areas of the house - some pieces related to Gaskell's life and work, with others choosing to use the characteristics of the space for particular installations. Trae England placed book spines labelled with her private thoughts, hopes and worries about pregnancy amongst the second hand library books. Viewers found themselves sidetracked into browsing the other titles at the same time as searching for further revelations by the artist.

Lisa Barry's Looking For Lizzie, saw the presence of Elizabeth sweeping silently through the guests at the opening, whilst upstairs bids for an intriguing collection of 'lots' were invited: Items 'left behind' by the elusive Lizzie included Barry's sumptuously staged location photographs.

Eddie Price showed his life's work in the large drawing room. His distinctive graphic drawings, designs and paintings created a dynamic display. The opportunity for Price to sift through all his past work in the large space was a valuable part of the process.

Tess Lomas and Elaine Cornelius' Touch Sensitive /Crash Pad installation explored the subject matter of the stress and rewards of relationships when partners are carers to each other through physical or mental health needs.

Annette Ebanks’ strong lino print collage designs and Colin Nixon’s pottery provided viewers with yet more examples of the diverse nature of the Pool Arts Project.

In the basement, Siobhan Samuels’ striking installation examined the relationship between slavery, fashion, sexual and popular cultures.

Upstairs, Becky Mary had created a wall hanging of old bras - a wry comment on the 'untidy' bedroom of her servants to which Gaskell objected.

Finally, Dave Speer’s A Great Night Out, In, celebrated his own favourite mix of cultures with a snappy video installation and digital photos encompassing heavy metal, fun fairs and drag racing all the more poignant for his quiet poem downstairs about his experience of cancer.

Pool Arts certainly put the party back into Gaskell’s residence!! On a more serious note, the exhibition demonstrated once again the high standard of work generated by this diverse organisation that provides opportunities to artists in the local area.

For further information email poolarts@gmail.com or ring 0161 273 1492.

The show, which ran between 23 & 25 November, was funded by CN4M (Community Network for Manchester) and ESF (European Social Fund). Find out more about Pool Arts at www.poolarts.org

The Gaskell House, 84 Plymouth Grove, is open on the first Sunday of every month (except January & February).

Live and Learn

Imperial War Museum North logoImperial War Museum North is one of the most talked-about new museums in the country and has already received over 1.5 million visitors. The museum is about people and their stories, about how lives have been and still are shaped by war and conflict.

The Project
'Live and Learn' aims to make the Imperial War Museum North more accessible to people of all ages and abilities who do not usually visit cultural venues. Too often people feel uncomfortable or unconfident in visiting museums - perhaps they are unsure of their welcome or just not sure how it is relevant to them, or even if it will be enjoyable.

The Course
'Live and Learn' will pilot a free, flexible short course aimed at group leaders designed to give them the confidence, skills and resources to bring their groups to visit museums, libraries and archives.
'Live and Learn' will provide the 'first step', giving group leaders the confidence to make a visit and equipping them with practical information to make their visit a success. Participants will be provided with resources to reuse with their groups, in web form, in community languages and on USB memory sticks as appropriate.

Beyond the Course
As well as working with group leaders, 'Live and Learn' will provide cultural venues with the knowledge to welcome groups who do not usually visit. The project will be based at Imperial War Museum North but aims to break down barriers, real or perceived, to visiting any cultural venues. For the purpose of this pilot, IWM North will work in partnership with identified cultural venues in the North West.
What delegates and others will get out of it:

Suitability
'Live and Learn' is ideal for the following people working in community organisations:

Course Dates
January: Wednesday 23, 7-9pm & Saturday 26, 11am–3.15pm
February: Thursday 21, 7-9pm & Saturday 23, 11am-3.15pm
March: Thursday 13, 7-9pm & Saturday 15, 11am-3.15 pm

Digital Northerner, Volume 4 - Call for artists

Get your band on the next Digital Northerner record. Do you make dance, electronica, future-punk, techno...? For the fifth release in the Digital Northerner series, an exclusively digital compilation record, Fat Northerner is looking for the above types of music.

Fat Northerner logoEmail your MySpace links to alex@fatnortherner.com with a short biog about your band. For more info on past releases visit www.fatnortherner.com

The Ironweed Project will be taking its signature electro-blues sound to Austin, Texas next March to perform at the legendary South by South West (SXSW) festival.

With its roots deeply entrenched in the soil of America's Deep South, it will be homecoming of sorts for the inimitable Ironweed hybrid. Bringing the blues back to its motherland edged with electronica and loaded with grit from the UK underground.

SXSW will provide the perfect platform for Dust Bowl, the critically acclaimed Ironweed album to be heard on a global scale. Launched recently on Fat Northerner Records, the future's looking gloriously sleazy for Aniff Akinola and his band of merry men.

'It's kind of mad to think that the Ironweed Project is taking its mashed up Manc electronica blues back to its spiritual home', says front man Aniff.

Established in 1987, SXSW has steadily gained ground as the music conference with its finger firmly on the pulse. Downtown Austin transforms into a hub of creativity as 100s of musical acts take to over 50 stages, rammed into a five day musical orgy.

With a discerning crowd of 10,000 industry movers and shakers expected to kick up the dust 12-16 March, there'll be no tumbleweed with Ironweed in town.
